Artist's Statement
I am inspired by interpretations of beauty, vintage fashion, and the power of color relationships. I am equally interested in gesture, juxtaposed flat and volumetric forms and the process of artistic mark-making. My paintings combine these visual elements to explore the essence of a subject or spirit of a moment I find multi-faceted, visually intriguing, or humorous.
Some paintings reveal themselves slowly and diligently and others find their way in quick and unexpected expression. I'm continually exploring the delicate balance between imposing necessary structure and exposing the vulnerable spontaneity of the painting process. As best I can tell, this tension enhances the content of the painting - whether figurative or abstract - to create a connection with the viewer. My paintings come from personal and societal influences, the joy and fear of mark-making, and a deep desire to create a spark of shared recognition with the viewer. From this connection, the viewer completes the picture through the filter of his or her own ideals, memories, relationships, and experiences.
